LAWMAKER URGE COLLEAGUES TO STOP PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT FROM BORROWING MORE MONEY

The lawmaker representing Jos North-North in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Honourable Baba Hassan, has kicked against the plan to borrow more money by the Plateau State government. Baba Hassan made this known while speaking with our Correspondent in Jos, that he rejects the matter in its entirety when it was being debated on the floor of the house. The governor, Jonah Jang  had sent a bill to the house seeking approval to borrow  more money. “I am not in support of that borrowing and these are my reasons; there is continuity in government, we have few months to go, if you borrow now the burden will be on the next administration. Its not just right. You can’t do all. Lets just use what we have and go” he said.

The Lawmaker said the usual practice of most governors is to plunge their states into debt when their tenure is at its tail end, thereby creating financial troubles for their predecessor. Baba Hassan, also added that the debt Profile of Plateau State is shrouded in secrecy because he and most of his colleagues are ignorant of what the state is owing its creditors.

“As a legislature I feel ashamed of my self that all I know of the debt profile of the state is based on rumours.  I just hope the members of the committee constituted to look into the matter will be magnanimous enough to throw away the bill. I cannot be part of borrowing a money that my people will not benefit from” he stated.

Honourable Baba Hassan who is a former deputy speaker and one of the oldest lawmakers in The Plateau State House of Assembly called on his colleague to throw away the bill because the previous borrowing of eight billion naira for provision of portable water in the state has not yielded any meaningful success.

Access to basic facilities such as water and sanitation is a crises level in many communities in the state as the governor had been accused repeatedly, that he has concentrated infrastructural development only in the local government area  where he hails from. It is therefore believed that other places will remain underdeveloped irrespective of any amount he borrows. “The last money we borrowed for the water project, that is N8Billion , is gone, and in my house that is in Gold and Base, GRA for that matter has not seen water for the past two years. So, as far as I am concerned borrowing more money is useless, and uncalled for.”
