After seven years of divisions among themselves the Palestinians finally signed a crucial agreement on a consensus government on 23rd May 2014 that has led to the formation of a unity government vital in paving the way for the resolution of the Middle East crisis. AASU joins the International Community to welcome this highly positive development.
It is important to recall that it has been 67 years since the United Nations' General Assembly adopted the Resolution 181 on the partition of the mandate territory of Palestine into two-State: Palestine and Israel on November 29, 1947. Since then the Palestinians have been waiting in very difficult and violent conditions for the establishment of their state.
Israel has consistently disregarded all the clear outlines of an agreement laid out in United Nations Security Council resolutions and continued unilaterally to implement its own policies i.e. building settlements on Palestinian land and walls etc.
It should be clear that no amount of violence, neither unilateral decisions like the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands and building walls will solve this long overdue crisis.
Only credible and meaningful negotiations capable of guaranteeing the existence of the two-state will pave the way for a lasting and peaceful resolution of this conflict. This should be accompanied with genuine political will and commitments. The continuous nonexistence of a Palestinian State is not sustainable and its consequences may be disastrous for coming generations.
It should be the responsibility of all those concerned to rise above personal interests to make sure that the Palestinian state exist. What are needed now are political will and courage, as well as a sense of historic responsibility and vision for younger generations.
AASU calls on the Israeli government to come to term with the realities and work with the International Community to resolve the Middle East long overdue crisis by recognizing and respecting the consensus Palestinian government;
AAU urges the Palestinians to deepen and strengthen this unity in order reinforce their capacity of negotiating and demand for the establishment of their State.
All for a peaceful resolution of the Middle East crisis!
