Currently, Facebook is allowed to be used by individuals aged 13 and older. However, children below the age of 13 may soon be able to sign up, Daily Mail reports.
You probably already know some pre-teens who are already on Facebook. However, such users signed up illegally. An estimated 7.5 million children aged under 13 lie to circumvent Facebook’s age restrictions.
In 2012, the social network filed a patent that would make this process more legitimate, by seeking approval from, and handing the controls of the account to, the child’s parent.
But this application was only made public last week, and has caused outrage among children’s rights campaigners.
