The body found on Tioman island in Malaysia has been confirmed to be that of missing British backpacker Gareth Huntley.
The identity was confirmed after hospital staff compared DNA from the body with that from Huntley’s mother who had flown out to Malaysia to join the search.
The cause of death has not yet been established.
The body was discovered on 4 June near a pond close to a kayak storage not far the Juara Turtle Project where Mr Huntley was living and working.
More than 100 people were involved in the search for Huntley, 34, from north London, who went missing on 27 May after telling friends he was going on a hike to a nearby waterfall.
Malaysian authorities had come under criticism for their search, but in recent days British ministers were assured that the Malaysia government had employed boats, a helicopter, and search dogs along with the 103-person team in the search.
