The new terminal which is expected to increase passenger traffic to 2.5 million per year is expected to be fully operational by July 30.
“One of the key attributes of the new Terminal 1A is the fact that it separates arriving, transiting and departing passengers. This is an important feature of modern secure airports across the world,” said Transport Secretary Michael Kamau during the flight test.
The terminal has clear signage to ensure all passengers get to where they need to be with minimum delay.
The new terminals will have more self-service check-in options and a seamless immigration clearance that will ensure that passenger movement is free flowing in a spacious environment.
“We envisage that the terminal will be able to handle one-way peak hour traffic of 1,500 passengers,” said Kamau.
The new terminal will start partial operations next week with Kenya Airways operating four commercial regional flights daily for the next three weeks.
So far, a simple dry run has been conducted on June 3 June, 2014. This was followed by a more elaborate one on June 25. Each of these exercises had about 250 participants.
“Today, we have just completed a test run with 60 KQ passengers on a narrow body aircraft. The passengers simulated the full departure procedure from arriving at the security point and check in to boardingthe aircraft. All services and facilities within the airport were operational during the exercise. We have other tests planned for next week,” said Kamau.
Terminal 1A has numerous duty free shops, ATM lobby and Forex bureau, Pharmacy, Food Court, Supermarket and large spacious lounges.
“The completion of this new terminal building at JKIA and ongoing construction of 20 million passenger terminal project, will be significant landmarks in development of the air transport infrastructure in Kenya,”said Kamau.
