Dr. Enema Amodu, an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, on Monday advised people who snore to see a doctor as it could be a sign of a more serious problem.
Amodu, a Consultant with the National Hospital Abuja, gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He described snoring as noisy breathing or heavy breathing during sleep.
He said: “Snoring is actually noisy breathing when somebody is sleeping and that occurs because there is a narrowing obstruction of the airway.

“The air way in this case is the upper airway, which actually starts from the tip of the nose.
“Anything that will cause obstruction of this airway can cause snoring.
“If it is a gradual onset and it is progressively worsening and its getting louder, that means the airway is being compromised, that means something is growing there.
“So, most times you should be worried about those ones, especially when it is associated with other things like discharge from the nose, catarrh and maybe bleeding, difficultly with swallowing.
“Then you should see a doctor.
“You should see an ENT surgeon.
“But if it stays the same way, you snore today, tomorrow you do not snore and you snore maybe when you are tired, you do not need to worry too much about it.”
Amodu said that allergies caused by irritants, tumour growth at the back of the mouth or throat, could cause snoring in children and adults.
Amodu said that congenital malformations at birth such as incomplete formation of the nose, face or compromised patency of the nose could cause children to snore.
“All these malformations can further narrow the airway and cause some degree of snoring,” the specialist said.
According to him, snoring can also be hereditary and can also be due to weight gain, pregnancy and alcohol consumption.
Amodu added: “The gradual onset can be as a result of weight gain because weight gain can make the throat area narrow.
“That can cause snoring.
“That is why you see some people when they suddenly start gaining weight, they start snoring.
“Pregnancy too can cause it.
“Alcohol can cause snoring because sometimes when you are sleeping, the tendency of the tongue to fall backward further narrowing that space between the back of the nose and the throat is there.”
Amodu said that snoring could be treated if the cause was found.
He said the tumours, adenoids and sometimes the tonsils could be removed through surgery.
“If your snoring is as a result of weight gain, we advice you to lose weight by exercising and eating a proper diet,” he added.
