An MP from the Istiqlal Party has been sentenced to five years in prison for misappropriation of public money and abuse of power.
The Istiqlal Party MP, Abdellatif Abdouh, was sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Marrakech Court of Appeal on Thursday February 19th, to five years in prison and to pay a fine of 50,000 MAD in addition to the seizure of some of his properties.
Abdellatif Abdouh was found guilty of corruption charges and the embezzlement of public funds. The former President of the Menara Gueliz municipality of Marrakech was also accused of the falsification of official documents and forgery.
The case dates back to 2001 when the Menara Gueliz municipality sold municipal lands to Essadi Hotel for 1026 dirhams/m2 while the latter were reportedly worth 8000 Dirhams/m2.
Seven city council members and a contractor involved in the case have received sentences ranging from 2 to 5 years in prison.
